Essential Visa Rules for All Applicants
- Apply Early: Submit your VAL application at least 3 months before your program registration date.
- Tourist Visa Warning: A Social/Visit Pass (tourist visa) CANNOT be converted into a Student Pass.
- Pass Conversion Enquiries: Holders of other valid Malaysian Passes wishing to convert must contact the USM@KL Visa Officer at

New Student Pass Application Workflow
Visa Approval Letter (VAL)
Official approval from the Immigration Department of Malaysia permitting study in Malaysia. Submitted online via EMGS portal.
Required Documents:
- USM Offer Letter
- Photo with White Background (EMGS Guideline)
- Passport Biodata Page (Min. 18 months validity)
- Academic Certificate & Transcript
Single Entry Visa (SEV)
Students from visa-required countries must obtain an SEV at the nearest Malaysian Mission or online eVisa before traveling.
Arrival in Malaysia
Travel only after receiving both VAL & SEV/eVisa. Arrive 2–5 days before official registration.
Carry Printed Copies in Hand Luggage: VAL, SEV/eVisa, and USM Offer Letter.
Medical & Pass Endorsement
Complete within seven (7) days of arrival in Malaysia.
2. Document Submission: Submit Passport, 2x Biodata & Entry Stamp copies, eVisa, eVAL, Medical Results, Photo & RM250 USM Fee to Level 20 Admin Office.
3. i-Kad Collection: Issued ~7 working days post-endorsement.
Progression & Variation Programmes
Upgrading Programme
For students registering for an upgraded level (e.g., Bachelor's to Master's or Master's to PhD).

Special Pass, Transfer & Cancellation
Visa Extension
Applied to extend validity when a current visa is expiring. Strictly under Immigration discretion.
Passport Re-Endorsement
Required when acquiring a new passport or replacing a lost passport. Submit at Level 20.
Processing: Min. 20 working days.
Pass Cancellation
Mandatory upon graduation, withdrawal, or university change before returning home.

Visa Unit of USM@KL accepts ONLINE PAYMENTS ONLY for all visa-related transactions.
